Did you know that All Seasons Wild Bird Store has a YouTube channel?
We posted our first video in May of 2015, a video where Store Manager Linda Gorr demonstrated raising Monarch butterflies. Since then, to date we’ve posted 97 total videos, covering topics like: feeding backyard birds, bird identification, seasonal information, product tips, migration, landscaping, and more. Most of our videos are just 1-2 minutes long, providing quick, visual references to introduce you to a topic that you may want to research more on your own.
While some of our videos reach a pretty narrow audience (OK, we admit it—they were duds!), others have resonated with viewers in a BIG way—with tens of thousands of views! Here are our Top 5 videos.
#5: Hairy or Downy?
This video aims to help you differentiate between these two very similar-looking woodpeckers. Apparently, this is an identification that vexes many of us, as this video has recorded 9,693 views!
#4: Defeat Starlings: Upside-Down Suet Feeders
This video was popular with viewers, but proved from the comments to be a bit controversial! 13, 609 views indicates that starlings are quite the issue for many backyard bird feeding enthusiasts! Many of the commenters have tried the upside-down suet feeder and discovered starlings to be more acrobatic than they hoped. As the author of this video, I can attest that the feeder is quite helpful in slowing down our Red-winged Blackbirds from eating suet—typically just a few of these birds learn the complex maneuver needed to hang upside down. I can further discourage the blackbirds by serving pure suet instead of suet embedded with seeds. I appreciate having this feeder in my seasonal “toolbox” of feeders to be able to serve suet in the spring and early summer.
#3: Minnesota’s Owls
This video, introducing viewers to the most common species of Minnesota’s owls, demonstrates the popularity of these magnificent raptors—it has 13,996 views! While one viewer found our choice of music to be grating (sorry! you can always listen with the sound off), it seems that this video resonates with owl enthusiasts.
#2: Bird Alarm Calls
This video was a standout for us in that it’s the only video we’ve devoted to the sounds that birds make. Maybe we should do more, because this video has received 59,975 views!
#1: House Finch or Purple Finch?
Our video with the top number of views (67,972) again helps to instruct folks about the differences between the commonly confused House Finch and Purple Finch. This video not only points out what to look for to differentiate the two species, it includes a visual quiz to test what you’ve learned! Our viewers have great things to say about this video, including:
- What a brilliant video! Complete with a test built in! Very helpful tyvm!
- Finally! Thank you!
- Thanks for helping me identify the male house finch who was just sitting on my porch, singing his heart out, giving my cats fits (indoors ONLY!) 🙂 It’s June and I’m just west of St. Louis. Think he’s heading north?
- This was helpful thank you
